Herbal Teas are soothing and warming. They give you the opportunity to taste the many flavors of the plants and this stimulates various actions. Tea is also taking time out in our busy days to sip and savor and take in, “I’m nourishing my nervous system.” Buying herbs in teabag form means the herbs have to be powdered in a way that exposes them in a thousand faceted ways that cause a more rapid loss of essential oils.

Infusion - For leaves and flowers of the herbals: Bring 1 cup of pure water in a non-aluminum pot to a boil and remove from heat. Add 1 heaping teaspoon of dried herb. Cover. Let sit for at least 10 minutes and strain. This is also known as a tisane.

Decoction - For roots and barks of the herbal teas: Simmer 1 heaping teaspoon of herb in 1 cup water at a low boil while covered for 20 minutes. Strain. If a root is particularily high in volatile oils (such as ginger or valerian) It is best infused rather than boiled. Some roots can be used a second time.

You can also make sun tea or moon tea for that matter! Place herbs in a jar for sun tea in an open glass bowl for moon tea. Let sit outside and collect the radiant energy. Drink moon tea first thing in the morning.

If using fresh herbs (undried), double the amount of herb.

Cold Infusion - Add 4 teaspoons of herb to 2 cups cold water and allow the herbs to soak overnight. Strain and heat to drinking temperature if desired.
